LOVE YOUR WORK
'Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.' Mevlana Rumi

Most of our adult lives are spent at work. We spend more hours with our work colleagues than we do with our loved ones; often more time at our workplace than we do sleeping and almost certainly, more time at work than in play, yet sadly, many people wake up each Monday morning dreading the week ahead.

There's no doubt that there will be times in your career when you're backed up against a wall. Times when financial pressures leave you without the choice to change roles immediately. There may be difficult phases you need to work through in order to get to a new level in your career or challenging relationships that must be put aside in order to get the work done.

But for the person who knows, deep in their heart, that they're in the wrong job and that every bit of colour is being drained from their world by staying in that job, something must change.

Understandably, fear of the unknown keeps people stuck in roles they don't love. Uncertainty about where to start, faltering confidence and concern about what other people will think, are all reasons for people to stay within their comfort zone.

The question to ask yourself is how will you feel in five years time if you don't make a change?

And what could be possible in ten, if you do?

It's not uncommon to feel torn, pulled in opposing directions and unable to commit to the decision of changing career paths...even once you've convinced yourself that you're ready.

It's not always plausible that you'll have just one driving passion, one clearly defined occupation or role that beckons you. It's not essential that you have a career 'path' that follows any traditional model...some of the most interesting people I know have changed careers many times.

All that is necessary is a strong will, a sense of adventure and an unbending commitment to be true to your soul as you begin the process of exploring what's possible.

- Take the plunge and move into the career that you know in your heart, you are 'meant to be in'
- Remodel your current role so that you are utilising your strengths (and as a result, getting more pleasure from your work)
- Develop the skills you need to be able to perform your role with confidence
- Improve your performance so you feel better about yourself in your role
- Set challenging career goals that will motivate you to grow

ON A PERSONAL NOTE
I've been labelled a princess in the past about my unwillingness to settle for any role I didn't love. I took that criticism on board without any apology. I was (and still am) really selective about how I earn a living (and if I'm honest with myself, about everything I spend my time doing!).

That's not to say that there weren't times when I had to stick it out in a role that I didn't love - but only for as long as it took me to find something better. I lived by the motto that if it wasn't great, it wasn't for me.

I've had the sort of career path that didn't always look impressive on a resume. I've had a myriad of roles and several complete changes in occupation. I took on each new role with an open mind and a willingness to work hard. Invariably, I'd know within a month or so if it was right for me and if it wasn't, I left. I went against all mainstream advice and did what instinctively felt right.

These days I think I am truly blessed. I wake up every Monday morning excited to start the week. After four and a half years in my business, I love what I do as much (if not more) than when I started. It has not been without it's challenges but I always knew that this is the role I was meant to be in.
