THIS MONTH'S NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2009 INNER CRITIC
'There is no planet sun or star could hold you, if you but
knew what you are...make the most of yourself, for that is all there
is of you.' Ralph Waldo Emerson
It is common for us to limit ourselves in life because of our inner
dialogue. Each of us has a little voice inside our head that speaks
to us of our shortcomings rather than our successes. It reminds us
of our failings and readily dismisses our achievements. It's a voice
that is often known as the 'Inner Critic'.
The Inner Critic is a harsh judge of almost everything we do. It
sends us messages about how we're not good enough. It tells us that
there's no point in trying, that it's too late to change or that
other people are better, smarter, funnier or more attractive.
The messages our Critic sends us generally emulate those that we
learned early in life from our parents, siblings or teachers. These
early judgements were designed to teach us how to behave
appropriately and stay safe in the world but they often left us
feeling that we were wrong. Some judgements were overt, others
implicit. Just the raising of an eyebrow was enough to let you know
that some things weren't approved of.
